Review: My friend Jorjeana

NY, I LOVE
“ONE LOOK AT HER FRESH FACE, and it's easy to imagine Jorjeana Marie as too sweet to be a heavy hitter. But that would be a mistake in judgment.
With a wit and sophistication that belies her youthful looks, Jorjeana dissects NY life at the same time that she lauds it. I've been a fully naturalized New Yorker for 16 long years, yet her poetry/theater piece takes me back to those first days in town, and plants me firmly in the rich and luscious ground of New York City. Her characterizations and mimicry are first rate, and the power of her poetry carries with you when you leave the theater. ”

Producer of the NY Solo Play Lab and Midtown Theatre Festival
Say Yes to Ally, Maryjane & Me
Forget "just say no" campaigns. Alcohol and drugs are the best
friends of the young artist at the center of Ally, MaryJane & Me,
a new play at the 78th Street Theatre Lab, Sept. 5-29.

Author Jorjeana Marie brings these vices comically to life, as
Ally (alcohol) and MaryJane (marijuana) help her protagonist
escape her chronic medical problems and dysfunctional family,
which includes an abusive father and suicidal mother. Can the
artist learn to live a fulfilling, chemical-free existence?

Presented by Cobblestone Productions and directed by Dan
Spurgeon, the show features Campbell Echols, Michael Simon
Hall, Elleen Hannah, Ron Micca, Foye Dashiell, Kelli Hornachek
and Mary Regan.

Ally, MaryJane & Me was originally a solo show that the author
performed in Los Angeles and New York, where it won the NYC
Theater Slam's Popular Vote this past May. Coincidentally, Off-
Broadway will see the spoofy musical Reefer Madness this fall.

Ally, Maryjane & Me
“Playwright Jorjeana Marie originally wrote Ally, MaryJane & Me as a solo show and has performed it on both coasts. For the Cobblestone production, she adapted her script to include characters that she would have acted out or otherwise described as the main character tells the story of her childhood, addictions, and recovery....it worked beautifully.
The inescapable assumption is that Ally, MaryJane & Me is based on real life. Drama is shaped differently though, and when characters click they can really take off. And when villains are played as well as they are here, there's nothing to do but sit back and enjoy”.

THE BOSTON COMEDY FESTIVAL
Chris Jones, Greg Rodruigues, Giulia Rozzi, Jorjeana Marie and John Curtin took the stage. The difference between the Vault on this night and the Vault of Thursday was vast-the Vault can be very, very good... or it can be, how shall we say, inhospitable. ..this night, it was very, very good.

“EVERY Sunday night a funny and talented comic named Jorjeana Marie gathers a group of comics to fill the downstairs room of The Village Lantern, at 167 Bleecker Street, hosted by the very funny Rick Younger who started his career as a singer—he's got the voice to prove it.
The night I was there, I had the pleasure of hearing Ross Bennett, a real crowd pleaser, Clayton Fletcher, Joseph Rocha, Wil Sylvince, and Lori Sommer who I had seen previously at Gotham.”
